The world of AI, or rather, the future world, will not only be Orwellian, as is commonly assumed, but rather Kafkaesque. State surveillance and self-censorship are already a reality, but not the pervasive powerlessness to lead a self-determined life. On the 100th anniversary of Franz Kafka's death, we should therefore remember that the prophet of human powerlessness already foresaw that one day there would be another invisible god, even more authoritarian than all the gods before him.
